Hazrat Al-Qasim (R.A) was born to Hazrat Hasan ibn Ali (R.A) in 667 AD. His father, Imam Hasan (R.A), was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). His grandfather, Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (R.A), was the cousin of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

LIFE

Hazrat Qasim (R.A) was only three years old when his father died. However, he grew up in the company of his paternal family. Like his cousins, Hazrat Awn (R.A) and Hazrat Muhammad (R.A), the sons of his paternal aunt Zaynab bint Ali (R.A), Hazrat Qasim (R.A) was taught fencing by his uncle Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali (R.A) and cousin Hazrat Ali al-Akbar ibn Hussain (R.A).

Hazrat Qasim (R.A) asked his uncle, “Will I also be among the martyrs?” Imam Hussain ibn Ali (R.A) replied: “How do you see death?” Hazrat Qasim (R.A) said, “O uncle, death to me is sweeter than honey.”

On the battle of Karbala, Hazrat Qasim (R.A), like other cousins before him, went to his uncle to ask for permission. Imam Hussain (R.A) would not permit him to fight because he was too young and Imam Hussain (R.A) could not bear the thought of anything happening to him. Hazrat Qasim (R.A) asked many times before going to his mother. When his mother saw that her son was upset, she gave him a letter that Hazrat Qasim’s (R.A) father had written before he died. The letter stated:

“My son Qasim, a day will come when my brother Hussain (R.A) will be facing an enemy army of tens of thousands. That will be the day when Islam will need to be saved by sacrifice. You must represent me on that day.”

Hazrat Qasim (R.A) read the letter and gave it to his uncle. After reading the letter Imam Hussain (R.A) said,

“O my brother’s son, how can I stop you from doing what your father wanted you to do? In the Name of Allah, go! Allah be with you!”

He went to the battlefield and killed many fighters. A man came from behind and struck Hazrat Qasim (R.A) on the head. He fell to the ground, bleeding heavily. He called out for his uncle. Imam Hussain (R.A) and Hazrat Abbas (R.A) rushed over. The army of Yazid got scared thinking they were coming to attack them, creating confusion. Horses began running from one side to another, trampling and killing Imam Qasim (R.A). Imam Hussain (R.A) and Hazrat Abbas (R.A) called out for him, but no reply came. When they found his body Imam Hussain (R.A) took off his abaa and with Hazrat Abbas (R.A) collected his remains. He was martyred at the age of 13 in the Battle of Karbala.
