Hazrat Syed Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A)
Hazrat Peer Syed Jahangeer Shah (R.A) was a Sufi Saint who came from India to Mauritius in the early 19th century. As per the practices during those days, he was requested, in his capacity as a pious and noble person, to accompany a group of traders.
Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A) left for the heavenly abode on 20th January 1890 (25th Jamad-Ul-Awwal). Thereafter, his son and daughter both returned to their native place in India.
Description
LINEAGE
Peer Syed Mahmud Shah Chishty (R.A), Bin Sayyed Imamuddin Chishty Ajmeri (R.A) is the father of the great Sufi Saint Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A). His Mazar is situated in Masta, Mandvi District, Kutch, India.
Bibi Sayeda Shehar Bano (R.A) Binte Bawan Mian Saheb is the mother of Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A). Her mazar is still in Bhuj, Kutch, India.
Hazrat Peer Jamal Shah (R.A) is the paternal uncle of Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A). His dargah is situated in the compound of the Jummah Mosque, Port-Louis, Mauritius. Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A) is the nephew of Hazrat Peer Sayed Hyder Ali Shah Al Qadri. His Mazar is situated in the city of Bangalore.
LIFE
Hazrat Peer Syed Jahangeer Shah (R.A) was a Sufi Saint who came from India to Mauritius in the early 19th century. As per the practices during those days, he was requested, in his capacity as a pious and noble person, to accompany a group of traders/merchants. Upon arrival, he stayed at Torren Street, Port-Louis.
Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A) left for the heavenly abode on 20th January 1890 (25th Jamad-Ul-Awwal). Thereafter, his son and daughter both returned to their native place in India. Once, it was reported that Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A) appeared in the dream of his son and his daughter whereby he requested them to build a shrine on his grave in Mauritius. Consequently, in 1898 the tomb was opened, and the body of the Peer was found to be intact. Thereafter, he achieved the status of a saint.
The construction of the Dargah was then authorized. The Dargah was completed in his honour in the same year. It is situated at the Cemetery of Bois Marchand, Terre Rouge, Mauritius.
MIRACLES
A number of miracles have been witnessed by people who frequently visited the Mazar of Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A):
- There was the name “Allah” written in the sky above the Mazar Sharif of Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A) when a photo was taken.
- A Mauritian devotee who was completely blind shared his miraculous experience. One night, Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A) came into his dream and he saw a divine light. As soon as he opened his eyes, he regained his eyesight. The next day, he went to the Dargah of the Peer to offer his prayers and to express his thanks and gratitude. On reaching there, he saw someone whom he called by his name. The person was surprised how the blind man could see him. When he asked him how he recognized him, the devotee revealed his miraculous experience of having seen Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A) in his dream and had recovered his eyesight.
LEGACY
Every day people visit the Dargah Shareef of Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A). The Mosque of Terre Rouge is named after Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A). The mosque is situated at Royal Road, Terre Rouge, Mauritius. Every year, people around the island and also from South Africa come to participate in the Urs organized. Naat Shareef is recited during the ceremony. Hajee Aniff Dauhoo was the first person to start doing the Sandal and organizing the Urs Shareef in honour of Peer Jahangeer Shah (R.A) in 1975. This tradition is still being continued by his family.
