LINEAGE

Dadi Amina’s father, Haji Imambaccus Sobdar, of Indian origin, was the imam of Jummah Masjid in 1853 and also Sirdar Jamaat. The family was staying in Plaine Verte at Corp de Garde Street, Port Louis. Her father died very old and was buried in the yard of the Sobdar family where Al-Aqsa Mosque actually stands. Her grandmother who lived for 150 years was also buried in that yard but under a Champa tree which she has planted by sowing a seed and which meant a lot to her. The Sobdar’s family and relatives helped the father and the grandmother in the construction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by means of brick-like structures which they were making with their own hands.

It was reported that a trader cut down the Champa tree to construct his house in a plot of land adjacent to the land of the Sobdar family. He encountered a lot of problems in his life and his face became paralyzed.

LIFE

Dadi Amina Bibi (R.A) was a very beautiful girl with a fair complexion and blue eyes. She was brought up in an environment of strict Islamic discipline. She was pious, God-fearing, and she was always dressed in a very decent and respectable way in spite of her young age. As a religious person, she used to make Dua for her near relatives who eventually obtained satisfaction. News spread far and wide and people of all religious beliefs flocked to her place for Dua. It became evident that she possessed certain spiritual qualities which Allah Ta’ala had endowed her with. Many people obtained satisfaction through her supplication especially during the time when there was an outbreak of the cholera epidemic. Soon she won the love of one and all and thus became famous throughout the island. She was very popular, polite, sympathetic, welcoming, and her devotion to the cause of suffering people knew no bounds.

It was said that Amina Bibi (R.A) was very fond of sour fruits which are normally consumed with salt to make them palatable. She contracted a disease called albumin which put an end to her life in this world at the unmarried age of nineteen.

MIRACLES

Once, an inspector of the City of Port Louis, arrogantly kicked the tomb and cut down the cotton tree. The inspector became paralyzed and Dadi Amina Bibi (R.A) appeared in his dream. His wife insisted that he should visit the tomb to present his apology for such an insult. As he could not walk alone, his wife brought him. But Allah Ta’ala who can read into the mind of any creature had already condemned him to remain paralyzed till his death.

It was reported that Dadi Amina Bibi (R.A) appeared in the dream of his father. For reasons which are unknown, the father opened the tomb of Dadi Amina Bibi (R.A) after 40 years following her death and found her body lying intact.

LEGACY

Before she left the world, she had expressed a wish to her father to be buried outside the family cemetery at Les Salines, Port Louis, as she wanted her tomb to be at the reach of everybody for Ziarat and spiritual favors from Allah Ta’ala, an unending love worth of Amina Bibi (R.A). She was buried according to her wish. Her tomb was receiving the shade of a nearby cotton tree. Her urs is held on the 22nd of Rabi Al Awwal.
